Get Ready to Donate
Before your appointment, be sure to...
Drink lots of healthy fluids
Drink plenty of healthy fluids (water, juice, non-caffeinated beverages) the day before donation. Drink 16 oz of water or juice about 20 minutes before giving for the best experience. Hydrating the day before is also good. Try 64 oz of healthy fluids.
Have a salty snack.
Try eating a salty snack the day before donation if you're not on a salt restricted diet. It helps with fluid retention, which increases blood volume.
Eat regular meals.
Make sure you're not donating on an empty stomach. Eat regular meals throughout the day of donation -- breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Sleep well.
Try to get at least 7 hours of sleep the night before donating.
Bring an ID.
Don't forget to bring your driver's license or any form of identification when you donate. Regular donors can simply show their blood card.
Wear practical clothing.
Make sure you wear a shirt with sleeves that can rolled up or one that provides easy access to your arm.
